CBD OIL: TEN ASPECTS TO BE AWARE OF - RQS

CBD is a cannabinoid that is gaining large amounts of traction in both recreational and medicinal fields. Whereas THC is the main focus among many growers and smokers of cannabis who desire the psychoactive effects that the plant can generate, CBD is makings its mark as a highly medicinal molecule that is already proving itself worthy as the medicine of choice in a wide variety of illnesses and ailments.

Although THC does have medicinal effects in itself, CBD seems to be more accepted as more of an appropriate and practical medicine due to the fact that it lacks the psychoactive properties that THC is so controversial and famous for.

However CBD isn’t just of interest to medical patients, it does have its uses in recreational domains as well as everyday use. Its vast amount of health benefits even put it in the ranks of a daily supplement that can help to promote health in the form of a high potency oil. Oil extracts allow higher doses than can be achieved through merely smoking the flowers of a high CBD strain. Here are some of the most groundbreaking facts about CBD oil.

1. CBD COMBATS NEGATIVE THC SIDE EFFECTS

As well as being used in isolation as a multifaceted medicine, CBD may also be able to be used in conjunction with smoked THC heavy strains in order to stave off some of the negative side effects that some people experience after smoking too much weed. A scientific paper published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry explains, “The few studies that exist on the effects of CBD show that this cannabinoid can counteract some of the negative effects of THC, although their results have not always been consistent.”

Some of the common negative experiences often reported from dosing too much THC include anxiety and paranoia, and inexperience and a new or foreign environment may exaggerate this. However, CBD has been shown in certain cases to reduce the anxiety-inducing effects of THC by around half.

2. CBD LEVELS ARE STRAIN DEPENDANT

Along with THC, CBD is one of the most commonly found cannabinoids within the cannabis plant. Much like THC, the presence of CBD can be greatly increased through selective breeding programmes that breed high CBD plants together in order to create genetics that produces higher levels of the cannabinoid. High CBD strains are typically viewed as medicinal and can either be smoked or processed further into numerous oils and extracts for increased potency.

Strains that are high in CBD include Dance World, Royal Highness, Royal Medic, Euphoria, Medical Mass and Painkiller XL.

3. CBD OIL IS EFFECTIVE AGAINST SEIZURES

CBD oil is becoming the medicine of choice for some people who suffer from conditions that result in seizures, especially those who have not responded to so-called conventional treatment. Many anecdotal accounts exist of people witnessing great success in themselves or their children whilst using CBD oil in order to manage seizures, and scientific studies are bolstering these claims.

One paper published in the Journal of Pharmacology documents a study that administered CBD to subjects that suffered from convulsions, and were still taking anti-epileptic drugs that seemed to no longer control the symptoms of a disease. Throughout the study, 4 out of 8 of the subjects remained almost free of convulsions throughout the experiment and 3 others noticed an improvement in their clinical condition. The authors of the study conclude that CBD has a potential use as an antiepileptic drug.

4. CBD IS NON-PSYCHOACTIVE

CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect when consumed, unlike its psychoactive counterpart THC that is responsible for the high caused when cannabis is combusted and smoked. This reason is why CBD seems much more tolerated in certain parts of the world and manages to avoid the stigma that THC and cannabis as a whole have received for so long. Additionally, CBD is non-toxic, it does not affect physiological parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. Both long term use and large doses are also well tolerated and believed to be safe.

5. SHOWING PROMISE FOR BREAST CANCER

Cancer is a serious disease, which conventional treatment fails against the majority of the time. Although research here is still in early stages, it is a ray of hope that cannabis and the cannabinoids it produces have potential to treat or at least manage cancer, CBD being one of them. The American government run website, cancer.gov, discusses the use of cannabis as a medicinal substance used by humans for thousands of years. They note studies conducted on animals that showed cannabinoids may be protective against certain types of tumours.

The website goes on to state, “Cannabinoids may cause antitumour effects by various mechanisms, including induction of cell death, inhibition of cell growth, and inhibition of tumour angiogenesis invasion and metastasis”.

An article published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics documents a study in which CBD killed breast cancer cells in a laboratory setting. It is important to note that this was an in vitro study, meaning the cells used existed outside of a living organism. The authors of the study explain, “There is an urgent need to develop innovative ways to treat breast cancer that has become resistant to established therapies. We sought to identify novel agents by examining natural products with validated, anticancer properties. We focused on a study on the cannabinoid CBD which induces cytotoxicity in human glioma, leukaemia, and breast cancer cells in vitro and inhibits the metastasis of breast cancer cells.”

The results of the study showed that CBD inhibited the survival of two types of breast cancer cell lines, oestrogen receptor-positive and oestrogen receptor-negative. CBD achieved this result by inducing a process known as apoptosis. Apoptosis is a process that is defined as the programmed cell death that occurs in multicellular organisms.

6. LEGALITY

The legality of CBD varies from region to region around the world. The obvious fact that CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, which has been prohibited in many areas for decades, places it into quite a controversial category. In the United Kingdom, CBD is recognised as a medicine, and those desiring to include it in their healthcare are advised to discuss it with their doctor. The government in the UK is working with companies to ensure products are of a good standard. This example of CBD tolerance is contrasted in the United States. Here, CBD is viewed as an illegal Schedule 1 substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration as it is an extract from the cannabis plant. So, although CBD and cannabis are tolerated by some states, the federal government is still opposed to it.

7. MAY SOOTHE THE MIND

CBD is looking to be an effective measure against anxiety and stress. In animal models, it appears to reduce the fight or flight response and decrease fear-avoidant responses.

8. GOOD FOR THE SKIN

CBD, among other cannabinoids, is anti-inflammatory and therefore have a potential role in the treatment of the inflammatory skin disorder known as psoriasis, according to a paper published in the Journal of Dermatological Science.

9. COMBATS SOCIAL ANXIETY

CBD has been shown to ease generalised social anxiety disorder and was shown to do so in an experiment that involved public speaking.

10. CBD IS AN ANTIOXIDANT

CBD has antioxidant properties and has shown to have the ability to protect neurones.
